Writer’s Guidelines

Please prepare a written proposal of 250 to 300 words as a preliminary query. The proposal should convince us that we should cover the subject and offer us an opportunity to judge your writing ability. Background information and writing credentials are helpful.

All unsolicited proposals are sent to us on speculation; replies should be received within eight weeks. You may send your submission via electronic mail to editor@BerksCountyLiving.com.
If you have supporting material or clips of previously published work, you may prefer to send your proposal through the
United States mail.
Address it to: Francine M. Scoboria, Editor
Berks County Living
GoggleWorks Center for the Arts
201 Washington St., Suite 525
Reading, PA 19601

If you send your proposal by mail, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for materials to be returned. If we decide to commission an article, the writer receives full payment within 30 days of publication. If the article is found unsuitable through no fault of the writer, 25% of the payment serves as a kill fee.

Berks County Living Magazine is buying First North American Serial Rights only. Our article length ranges from 800 word departments to 2,500 word full-length features. We consider focused subjects that fall within the general range of Berks County Living interests, such as: home design, (interior and outdoors), gourmet food, fine-dining restaurants, art, culture, theater, local businesses, local events, and community leaders. We do not consider previously published articles. We have a three-month lead time.

Illustrations are not the responsibility of the authors, but if you do have photographs or illustration materials, please include a selection of them with your submission. In general, 35mm color transparencies or prints are perfectly acceptable. Photographs published in the magazine are usually obtained through assignments, stock agencies, or specialized sources. We do not maintain a photo library and photographs should be submitted only to accompany a specific article.
