When Robert Burns added his own spin to a Scottish folk song to create his version of Auld Lang Syne, he hit a homerun. This song has legs! While some holiday traditions at worst annoy me and at best fail to move me, I love the sound of people singing this song on New Year’s Eve.
Am I sentimental? Yes. Occasionally consumed by a bittersweet nostalgia for the past? Guilty as charged. And I am very happy about it!
The end of one year and the beginning of another seems a perfect invitation to reunite with old acquaintances and friends and celebrate “auld lang syne” which can be translated as “days of long ago.”
At Berks County Living, we try to keep you in touch with some of your old acquaintances and friends. You might find some on the last page of each issue, “In the Limelight.” Looking for places to go to find old and new friends? Check out the “Vibe,” our monthly calendar of concerts, plays, art exhibits and many other events. For places to go out and celebrate with friends, check out the best restaurants in our monthly “Dining Out” profile and our Dining Guide.
I am wishing all our readers a joyful and safe New Year’s Eve! As we celebrate our memories with old friends and family, we can create new plans and dream up new adventures. We invent the future. The past is part of the clay we use.
Wow, the page will soon turn from 2009 to 2010. A whole new decade to invent!
Cheers!
Francine
