It was a beautiful day in The Reading Public Museum Arboretum for a photo shoot.
Throughout the afternoon, many of the 24 young professionals on the rise who are featured on pages 34-44, and leaders of local family businesses, profiled on pages 46-49, stopped by the Berks County Living greeting station. We chatted over lemonade and soft pretzels. Then Michael Anderson, director of public relations and marketing at the Museum, guided them to beautiful spots within the 25 acres of the Arboretum.
There they met up with Robyn L. Jones, associate publisher of BCL, and photographer Donovan Roberts Witmer, editor of our sister publication, Susquehanna Style, and prepared for their close up.
If you haven’t visited the Arboretum lately, take some time to enjoy this Berks gem! As you walk along the Wyomissing Creek, which flows through the Arboretum, you will be surrounded by 65 distinctive specimens of gorgeous flowers and trees, some of which were planted back in the 1920s, when the Arboretum was founded.
As I sipped lemonade and talked to local professionals featured in this issue, I contemplated the positive aspects of living and working in Berks County. Everyone seems to know each other, either directly or indirectly. Maybe there are six degrees of separation between humans on the planet, but it seems there are about two degrees of separation between most Berks residents.
So many people here are truly dedicated to their careers and to making our hometown a better place. People like financial advisor Jermaine D. Edwards, who shares his expertise with students through Junior Achievement of Greater Reading & Lehigh Valley, and Heidi Williamson, who works to create strategic, meaningful change through the Berks County Community Foundation. People like the Kuhn family, of the Kuhn Funeral Home, who are there for other families during some of life’s toughest moments.
And don’t miss Joe Scoboria’s interview with architect Lee C. Olsen on page 64, and the photo of Lee by John Secoges. Lee is a native of Berks who has truly made a difference and continues to give back every day, through his work.
We hope you will vote for the annual Best of Berks winners! Either mail us the ballot on page 19 or vote online at www.BerksCountyLiving.com. The deadline for voting is Sept. 12. We look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers!
